Manuel Cancio Meliá is Full Professor of Criminal Law at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.

Research Fellow of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD; Universität Bonn), 1992/1993, 1998; Alexander-von-Humboldt Research Fellow (Universität Bonn, Universität München, Universität Freiburg), 2002/2009. Awarded five degrees of Doctor Honoris Causa: Universidad Peruana los Andes, Huancayo, 2008; Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, Argentina, 2012; Universidad Nacional de la Amazonía Peruana, Iquitos, 2013; Universidad de Huánuco and Universidad Inca Garcilaso de la Vega (Perú), 2016. Corresponding member and Secretary of the Criminal Law Section of the Spanish Royal Academy for Jurisprudence and Legislation since 2005. Since 2015, he has been a member of the Criminal Law Section of the Spanish General Codification Commission. PhD tutor of 9 doctoral students who achieved excellent ratings. Member of the Georg Forster selection committee of the Humboldt Foundation since 2015.

His works include monographs on the relevance of victims’ behaviour in criminal law (the subject of his doctoral thesis, Conducta de la víctima e imputación objetiva, 1998, 2nd ed. 2001), terrorism offences (Los delitos de terrorismo: estructura típica e injusto, 2010) and so-called “enemy criminal law” (Derecho penal del enemigo, 2003, 2nd ed. 2006, together with G. Jakobs). His participation in several commentaries on the Spanish penal code is also worth highlighting. Other publications (books, chapters, articles, case discussions) regarding principles of criminal law, criminal law and legal dogmatics, comparative criminal law studies, European criminal law and several individual categories of offences (sexual crimes, terrorism, personal injuries, crimes against the environment, organised crime) have been published in Spain, most countries of Latin America, Germany, the United States, Italy, Portugal, Great Britain, Belgium, Finland, Turkey, Taiwan, China and Ukraine.

He has been and is a participant and lead researcher in a series of Spanish and European funded research projects in criminal law.

He is a member of the advisory boards of several Spanish, Latin American, Canadian and German journals of criminal law.
