Daley J. Birkett (LL.B., LL.M., Ph.D.) is an Associate Professor and Head of Law at the University of Birmingham Dubai.

His research interests lie in public international law, with a particular focus on the law and practice of international(ised) criminal tribunals and on international peace and security. His current work examines sentencing in international criminal law, including projects on sentencing the crime of aggression and on punishing the proposed crime of ecocide.

Daley’s scholarship has appeared in leading journals, including the Leiden Journal of International Law, the Journal of International Criminal Justice, and the Chinese Journal of International Law. He has also (co-)edited and contributed chapters to volumes published by Cambridge University Press, Routledge, and Brill Nijhoff.

A multi-award-winning researcher, he shared the 2020 Journal of International Criminal Justice Prize (with Priya Urs) for his article, “Managing Frozen Assets at the International Criminal Court: The Fallout of the Bemba Acquittal.”

He has twice served as Legal Consultant to the International Judges of the Supreme Court Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC).
